Do You Like Frogs?

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009
Where'd he go? Once, many years ago, while visiting a pet shop an amphibians enthusiasts excitedly approached me and asked “do you like frogs?”. No, I really don’t. But while collecting the broken tree limbs and debrie from Sunday’s wind storm, my niece was startled by sudden movement. She had come upon a wood frog. Reddish brown with a dark mask and light line on the upper jaw. It was perfectly camouflaged with the orange and reds of the fallen leaves. If you looked away from it, it was hard to find again in the foliage. It looked like it was impersonating a chameleon! We decided it would be best to leave that area of the yard undisturbed for the safety of the little guy. Here are some pictures we took of the Cam-o-frog! Wood Frog!

No frogs were harmed in the making of these photo’s.

A Mystery

The first half dozen eggs I can’t be boring you with egg updates all the time, but something interesting happened yesterday. The count of eggs thus far is nine. We scrambled our first four and they were delicious. The most I have collected in a day is two, and still some days, no eggs at all.

The first four eggs, scrambled with toast Yesterday, late afternoon, I went in the coop for a visit. Suddenly, I saw an egg in the corner of the coop. This was strange to me because all eggs so far have been laid in the nest boxes. The egg looked perfect but when I went to pick it up it was jelly like in texture. The shell didn’t harden. There was also a yolk found in the coop, no white and no shell. I pitched both into the woods. I am wondering if either came from Little Bit which is a smaller, shyer hen. Would they have eaten the white and the shell, but not the yolk? These are mysteries only the hens can solve, and they’re not talking!
